Q: What is an airbrush?
A: An airbrush is a small, air-operated tool that sprays fluid (paint, ink, dye, stain, glaze, etc.). It resembles, and is held like, a pen. It applies paint through a process known as atomization.

Q: What's atomization?
A: An airbrush takes a fluid and turns it into a directed airborne mist. You can think of it as a sophisticated perfume atomizer or as a controllable spray paint can.

Q: How does an airbrush work?
A: The airbrush must be attached to an air source to spray. Airbrushes have two systems that must work together to function properly. The air system provides energy for the atomization of the fluid. Q: What types of surfaces can be worked on?
A: All surfaces can be airbrushed: paper, canvas, plastic, metal, glass, License plates, wood, fingernails, leather, skin, etc. You can even airbrush a deep, dark suntan. The key is to insure the proper preparation of the surface prior to spraying and its compatibility with the sprayed material.

Q: What kinds of paint can I use with the airbrush?
A: Most paints: acrylics, watercolors, automotive paints, enamels, alkyds, etc., are sprayable as long as they are thinned to a consistency, like light cream, that enables them to flow easily through the airbrush. However, if you're just learning how to paint with an airbrush consider buying airbrush-ready paints. With premixed airbrush paints, you can focus on improving your technique rather than worrying about whether or not your paint is going to clog the airbrush.

Q: What kinds of images can be produced with an airbrush?
A: An artist can produce any kind of image that he or she can with a brush. The big difference is that by spraying the color, you have the ability to make sharp, crisp lines as well as amazing soft fades, blends and shadows not possible with a bristle brush.

Q: "But I can't draw a straight line. How can I get good results as a beginner?"
A: There are many tricks, textures, and special effects you will learn as you go along. You can learn these through classes, books, videos, instructional websites (such as http://airbrushtricks.com/) or working with other airbrush artists. Many professional artists use a combination of stencils and common items such as cotton batting or feathers - to achieve the effects that they want. You can make your own stencils or use ready-cut stencils for consistent and professional results.

Q: Is there a way to project an image onto a surface as a guide?
A:Yes. There a number of Image Projectors on the market that can come in handy, especially when doing large images such as signs and murals. Also, Light Boxes work well when transfering an image from the original to a transparency film to be projected.

Selecting the Right Airbrush

Before choosing an air brush, consider the factors unique to your particular situation. What type of work will the air brush be used for? What type of materials will be sprayed through the air brush? What is the scale of the project? What is your level of experience? The list of terms below, the cut-away air brush diagram, and the reference chart will help you select the best air brush for your intended application.

INTERNAL MIX
indicates that air and paint mix inside the air brush. Air and paint come together inside the head assembly to produce a thoroughly atomized fine dot spray pattern.

EXTERNAL MIX
indicates that air and paint mix outside the air brush. Air and paint come together outside the head, or fluid assembly. External mix air brushes produce a larger dot spray pattern than internal mix air brushes.

DUAL ACTION
refers to air brushes on which the trigger controls both air and color (down for air, back for color). This simple maneuver allows the artist to change the width of the line, the range of value and the opacity of paint without stopping their hand motion.

SINGLE ACTION
refers to air brushes on which the trigger controls only the air flow. When the trigger is depressed, a pre-set amount of fluid is sprayed. The amount of fluid is regulated by turning the needle adjustment screw at the back of the handle, or in case of an external mix air brush by turning the fluid cap on the paint tip at the front of the air brush.

GRAVITY FEED
refers to air brushes with top-mounted color cups in which gravity draws paint into the air brush. Less air pressure is required enabling slower hand movement which creates excellent control for fine detail applications.

BOTTOM FEED
refers to air brushes on which paint enters through a siphon tube or color cup attached to the bottom of the air brush. Removable jars or various size color cups can be connected to and utilized with bottom feed air brushes. This configuration is generally more versatile and enables the user to change colors quickly.

SIDE FEED
refers to air brushes on which a small color cup fits into the side of the air brush. The side feed color cup rotates enabling the user to work on either a horizontal or vertical surface.
